Our Collective Duty

Sports Fund deals with something we all know about and have read about. Young people today do not participate in enough physical activity and as a result it has become increasingly difficult for them to maintain healthy lifestyles on a long-term basis.

The government has set a target for school sport and has stated that all pupils in English schools are to have at least four hours of sport per week by 2010. This is to be made up of two hours of high quality PE and sport at school and a further two to three hours out of school provided by schools, clubs or community. The reality is that schools, parents and children themselves compete against spending cuts, insurance premiums, lack of facilities and space restrictions. There is also a gravitating trend towards sedentary hobbies based around the Internet, the television and more sophisticated computer games along with a diet often fearfully high in additives and refined sugars. Our nation’s youths are rapidly falling into an inactive and unhealthy lifestyle which is very difficult to alter unless there is drastic change and both children and schools get the funding and support they need to actively change their lives. Sports Fund is not on a solo mission, it is the collective responsibility of everyone in the United Kingdom to improve the physical health of our nation by getting them healthy and active, and it is Sports Fund’s aim to give young people the means and support to begin to do so.
